Analytical Methods to Meet NJDEP Groundwater Quality Standards for 1,4-Dioxane

Alpha Analytical has provided this Technical Bulletin to assist our clients in understanding the analytical methods configuration necessary to meet the revised NJDEP Ground Water Quality Standards (NJ-GWQS) (N.J.A.C. 7:9C).

In November 2015, NJDEP revised the Interim Ground Water Quality Criteria for 1,4-Dioxane (CAS #123-91-1) from 10ug/L to 0.4ug/L (effective 11.30.15).

In 2013, USEPA moved 1,4-Dioxane from the Target Compound List (TCL) VOC list to the TCL SVOC list.

NJDEP guidance encourages LSRPs to use professional judgment at any site to address this or any compounds based on knowledge of site-specific conditions and project-specific objectives.

Analytical Approach:
Determination of 1,4-Dioxane by EPA Method 827O in Selected Ion Monitoring (SIM) mode with Isotope Dilution meets the revised NJ-GWQS of 0.4ug/L. Alpha Analytical holds NJDEP certification (MA#935) for this analytical approach in groundwater (non-potable water). Alpha Analytical is a NELAP accredited laboratory.

Sample Collection Guidelines:
This analytical approach for 1,4-Dioxane requires the water sample collection guidelines below:

Analyte CAS# NJ-GWQS (ug/L)

Lab Reporting Unit (ug/L)

Bottle Order Hold Time
1,4-Dioxane  123-91-1 0.4 0.15 2 x 500mL Amber (no preservative, cooled to 2C) 7 Days (to extraction)
